Jasper Ebus, 26, is co-owner of the startup Stactics. About 4 years ago, he and two other guys from Limburg started the data company while studying at the Technical University (TU) in Eindhoven. It started as a hobby project, but got bigger and bigger. After graduation, the young entrepreneurs flowed into the company. By now, the Stactics team consists of 8 employees who together form "the new generation of data professionals."

'Every day we are doing things we love: building data solutions for our customers. It's a piece of process optimization, we always think that something can be done better by using data. We also really believe in that power of data. We try to roll this out as widely as possible. Mainly in Limburg and Brabant, around us in Eindhoven. Basically, we started with municipalities and kept expanding. Now we are growing in various manufacturing companies, but also companies in the sensor industry, for example. As long as something can be done with data.'

Why are you engaged in sustainable business?

'We are a data company and believe firmly in the power of data. Our mission is to let every company experience that, but in their own way. Around you, you hear more and more about AI. Everyone seems to want to bet blindly and extremely on AI. But deploying that complex AI without a plan or a concrete goal, in our opinion, is not sustainable at all.

I really think we're going to have a lot to gain from AI in the future. We just need to approach it wisely and in a sustainable way. From our vision, we use data and AI to enrich and support humans so that you have more time to do what you really want as an employee. Focusing on things you like about your work and being able to spend more time on them. For us, that's sustainable business.

In the end, your people are the most important thing. And you can help them really well by using data or AI in a sensible way.'

What, in your opinion, is needed to accelerate the path to a sustainable society?

'Innovation is the holy grail in this. Companies must dare to challenge their own status quo. See what you can do yourself to get started more sustainably. How you can be more efficient in the things you already do. How you use data to get rid of your gut feeling. Then you can really take innovative steps.

Second, knowledge sharing is essential. Concrete real-world examples are needed. Share what has worked for your company and inspire others to take steps as well. It is very nice to listen to success stories of multi-million dollar companies. But what I find particularly interesting are the SMEs that have taken a small step and where this has had a lot of impact. Sharing knowledge around those small, achievable improvement steps is very important in the acceleration towards a more sustainable society.'

What do you contribute to a smarter, more sustainable and/or healthier Limburg?

'Stactics is based in Eindhoven, on the High Tech Campus. Nevertheless, we have many customers in Limburg. Every day we build new data solutions together to make those companies a little better every day. Our motto is therefore: Smarter together.

For us that ranges from building a roadmap with all the small steps you need to take to digitize, to the more advanced solutions such as AI models. Think of a model that informs growers when the best time to water their crop is to promote growth. Or a model that signals during peak energy generation that the washing machine can run.

We sometimes build these data solutions very specifically based on customer requirements. With municipalities, on the contrary, it's often the same questions. Looking at what data is already there and how to make better use of it.'

How can other organizations/entrepreneurs make that shift? Do you have any tips?

'Don't wait, but start. You don't have to be groundbreaking right away. Or apply very complex AI. Just start small. Talk to your employees, see where the bottlenecks are and try to address them. Often you can use data to solve those small challenges and then you get a kind of flywheel effect. And so you already take your first step toward sustainable digitalization.

In addition, I mention knowledge sharing again. Everyone still keeps the information a little to themselves. But secretly many companies are already working on sustainable digitization. You don't have to see each other as competition, just open up. There really is enough work for everyone. In the end, we all benefit from sustainability and a sustainable future. And we can help each other with that, I think.'

Why are you a member of shiftLimburg?

'First of all, to expand our network in Limburg. We have big ambitions in Limburg in terms of growth. Through shiftLimburg we can get to know other companies.

Stactics is still young. On the one hand, we have already done really nice projects and can also share nice results. On the other hand, we are just starting out. We are driven and get a lot of energy from learning. We are also curious about what is already being done in Limburg, and who is active in digitalization. Not only me, but our whole team gets a lot of energy from that.'
