When the last day of shelf life has arrived, they still go over the counter for a minimum price of 25 cents. Supermarket chain Lidl wants to reduce food waste in this way.

For now, this trial of several weeks will start in 23 Lidl stores around Amersfoort and in 't Gooi. The discounting of fresh products applies mainly to bread, meat, vegetable and fruit boxes. If the fight against food waste with this stunt is a success, the supermarket wants to introduce this nationwide. Until recently, Lidl, like other supermarkets, sold products until the last day before the least shelf life.

Multiple ways in the fight against food waste

In addition, Lidl has announced the collaboration with the app Too Good to Go. Through this app it is indicated where a cheap grocery package can be bought from fresh products that are almost past their expiration date. Other supermarkets have also introduced ways to combat food waste. Examples are the electronic price tags, where automatic discounts on products are passed on or packaging has been made reusable.

Influence Cabinet

The Cabinet wants to halve food waste by 2030. The average Dutchman throws away 41 pounds of food annually. Around 2.5 billion kilos of food are wasted in the chain from supplier to store and consumer. Supermarkets are responsible for 4% of the waste and also have a major influence on the behavior of their suppliers.
