Henk Staghouwer and Christianne van der Wal-Zeggelink officially started at the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) on Monday. As minister of LNV, Staghouwer wants to create future perspectives for farmers 'with good earning models, a stronger position and with more appreciation'. Van der Wal's ambition as Minister for Nature and Nitrogen is to work 'per area' to ensure that nitrogen emissions are halved by 2030.
Nearly a year after the fall of the third Rutte cabinet, the conclusion of the longest cabinet formation ever took place on Monday. In the morning all new members of government were sworn in by King Willem-Alexander and afterwards the traditional picture was taken at the Noordeinde Palace. In the afternoon the handover took place at the Ministry. Former minister Carola Schouten also said farewell to the Ministry of LNV. In the new cabinet she will start as minister for Poverty Policy, Participation and Pensions. She is also vice-minister-president.

Henk Staghouwer is responsible for the dossiers agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, food quality, animal welfare and animal health (DGF), plant breeders' rights and the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority. In his ambition document he expresses appreciation for Dutch agriculture, horticulture and fisheries. In recent years, Staghouwer has seen uncertainty grow about the future prospects for farmers, while nature and biodiversity have also come under increasing pressure.
As a brand new minister, he wants to contribute to restoring that balance. "I think it is important that (young) farmers, horticulturists, fishermen and their families know where they stand, with good earnings models, a stronger position and more appreciation. In this they are not alone. I see it as a clear task to make agreements with market parties (from banks, suppliers, processing industry and food providers such as retail and supermarkets) and civil society organizations. They too, not unlike every inhabitant of our country, have a responsibility in making agriculture more sustainable and restoring the balance and nature."
Staghouwer was previously a deputy in Groningen and his portfolio included agriculture.

In her ambition document she writes that in recent years the Netherlands has adapted the landscape to the challenges of the time. In the coming years, she says, we will face such a challenge again.
Van der Wal wants to strengthen nature and invest in future-proof agriculture so that nitrogen emissions are halved by 2030. "As Minister for Nature and Nitrogen, I am faced with this task. We will do this by working on an area-by-area basis, because one area is not like another. In doing so, I am asking for a contribution from all sectors. From agriculture to construction, industry and mobility. We have to talk to each other to see what the possibilities are, within the set targets and scarce local space."
Van der Wal was a deputy in the province of Gelderland until the appointment. In her portfolio she had economic affairs and innovation, mobility and aviation.
