On January 30, 2023, Rabobank and LIOF will launch the Food Waste Challenge. A program on food waste organized together with Wastewatchers for Limburg hospitality entrepreneurs.

For eight weeks you will focus on reducing food waste within your company. You will be guided by experts from Wastewatchers. Participating is free, easy and also takes little time. This while the payoff is great: previous participants of the Food Waste Challenge show that savings of more than 50% are achievable. This gave them benefits in kilos, Co2 emissions and in Euros.

"Dutch restaurants and hotels could collectively reduce food waste by 61 million pounds annually, saving €582 million"

Tamara Piatkiewitz-Weide, Business Developer Tourism at LIOF, explains what the Food Waste Challenge means in concrete terms and why participation is interesting for you too!

What prompted the Food Waste Challenge?

'LIOF and Rabobank are urging entrepreneurs in Limburg to become more sustainable. This is not only good for the environment, but also for the wallet. A lot of food disappears in the garbage every day. How can we reduce the throwing away of food and what can still be done with waste? From 'Waste to Profit' is the idea and we start with the Hospitality industry.'

Who is this challenge for? And what to expect?

'Restaurants and hotels in Limburg. After registration, someone from Wastewatchers will come and do a 0-masurement within your company. Then an inspiration session will be organized and entrepreneurs will learn from each other what measures they can take. After that there are a number of online modules that entrepreneurs have to follow. They can apply the knowledge gained in their company. After 8 to 10 weeks there will be a 1 measurement and we want to see how much we and the other participants have saved. So a real challenge!'

What do you hope to accomplish with this?

'The primary goal is to make the entrepreneur aware of what is being thrown away unnecessarily and what, if anything, you can reuse. In the end, every little bit makes a big pile. So where savings can be made, you make a profit.'
