The urgency to switch from fossil fuels to more sustainable energy sources is growing by the day. This is why Fontys Venlo has developed the course 'Energy Transition for SMEs. Course leader Fons Claessen explains, "The need to move away from fossil fuels is greater than ever. Companies must contribute to reducing energy consumption, saving raw materials and reducing CO2 emissions. European climate obligations and changing legislation, such as the Energy Agreement, make it necessary for companies to act now.'
The course is designed for SME entrepreneurs and decision makers who are responsible for energy consumption within their companies. In addition to the basics of sustainability, it focuses on dealing with grid congestion and planning sustainable expansion strategies. Participants learn to map their current energy consumption and gain insight into concrete measures to reduce it. Using a questionnaire and quick scan, participants learn where the most gains can be made, such as more efficient use of heating systems.
Trends and low-hanging fruit in energy transition
Fons sees a shift from non-committal to stricter requirements from laws and regulations, as well as from customers. Moreover, fluctuating energy prices play a role. 'Every kilowatt you don't use saves money,' says Fons. 'SMEs can already make a lot of gains through simple steps, such as optimizing heating systems, using motion detectors for lighting and using white roofing, which can keep the indoor climate up to five degrees cooler.'
Criticizing Energy Transition Advisors
An important benefit of participating in this course is that business owners gain basic knowledge about the energy transition themselves. 'This allows them to ask better questions of advisors and make more targeted decisions,' says course leader Fons. This makes companies less dependent and strengthens their negotiating position.
In conclusion, he notes that younger generations, such as Gen Z, prefer companies that actively invest in sustainability. 'A sustainable course attracts young talent and gives companies a competitive advantage.'
