A little over three years ago, the Food from Food project was launched, an interregional project that helps convert residual flows from the agri-food industry into new food products and food raw materials. There are already 17 projects set up in Limburg, North Brabant and Flanders.

About Food from Food

The project Food from Food stimulates, supports and accelerates innovations in the agro and food industry in the field of valorization of vegetable by-products into food. It is a cross-border project of Interreg Flanders-Netherlands and supports both financially and practically.

Food from Food is made possible by the Province of North Brabant, Province of Limburg, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Province of East Flanders and Province of Antwerp. With partners such as Brightlabs, FI&S and HAS University of Applied Sciences, the project has appropriate facilities and knowledge available.

Apple peel show

One of the projects revolves around processing apple peels into new raw materials. Fruit grower Kervo from Venlo is involved in this project. The family business has been growing and processing cherries and apples for generations. Because of the supply of many peeled apples for apple pies, apple peels are a considerable residual flow in the company. Currently this is being turned into biogas.

Incubaker - food innovator for the bakery chain - came up with the idea of developing semi-finished products from apple peels together with Kervo and Bacu that can be used as a raw material in bread and pastry products. ILVO and FI&S are also collaborating in this project to find new possibilities for the apple peel.

Rabbage fiber

Peeters- Bonten from Heide is a growing and trading company in rhubarb. A large part of this rhubarb is being processed to rhubarbjuice. During the pressing of the rhubarb the juice and fibres come free. The juice is used in all kinds of foodproducts. The fiber is still a product which is brought back on the land as compost. In cooperation with various partners of Food From Food, Peeters Bonten has started looking for possible applications of the fiber in food products.

Healthy plums

De Fruitboer from the South Limburg village of Gronsveld is involved in the Food from Food project where they are working on the development of a product from the surplus of the plum harvest to give the eating experience a boost, with a focus on the health-promoting aspects in the plum. Ideally, the product will be developed in collaboration with and for healthcare institutions such as hospitals and retirement homes. This fully local Dutch product will fit within the clean-label trend and answer the demand for target group food and functional food. The product must be easy to eat (ready-to-eat), so that a product with high nutritional values is consumed quickly and easily.

Starting your own project

Food from Food runs from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2020 and is thus approaching its end. Yet there are still opportunities to start a new project. Do you have your own ideas for a project? Do you want to add value to vegetable side streams? Within Food from Food, 20 projects are funded with a maximum budget of 40,000 euros per project. This includes the maximum grant of 50% (i.e. €20.000).

Save the date

The last congress of Food from Food is scheduled for Tuesday, September 22* in Mechelen, Flanders. The congress will be all about (combating) food waste, by means of inspiration sessions, matchmaking and demos. There will be time and space to get to know other partners, taste new products and get inspired for a new idea. A number of projects that have participated in Food from Food will have the opportunity to present themselves and in addition a summary will be given of all the results that have been achieved in recent years. The program and the possibility to register will follow soon.

*The date is subject to future corona measures by the government. As soon as it is clear whether the event will be allowed to go ahead, there will be the possibility to register.
