The plans had been there for years, but now it is clear when the large-scale production of biogas at Chemelot can begin. Construction of the plant will start in 2020 and two years later the first pig manure can be converted to biogas.
Green light
In 2018, the plant of Biogas Company Zitta seemed not to come. The government decided not to subsidize the project. Early this year, however, money (166 million) was released from the Stimulating Sustainable Energy fund. This made it possible for initiators OCI Nitrogen and Re-N Technology to develop the plant. Meanwhile, the permits are in order and it has been announced that construction will start next year. Also the subscription of the required manure has started.
From manure to biogas
The plant will be from the end of 2021 or early 2022 seven hundred thousand tons of manure per year processing. This will make it the largest biogas plant in the country. This will significantly alleviate the problem of manure surplus and also reduce the use of natural gas at Chemelot.
