University College Venlo, part of Maastricht University,is getting a new chair: 'Youth and Healthy Nutrition'. Industry and the university joined forces to make this possible. For at least five years, research will be conducted here on healthy food in relation to youth and young people. Following this, education will also be provided.

The costs of the chair are covered for at least the next five years. Financial contributions came mainly from industry: Scelta Mushrooms, ZON fruit & vegetables, BASF, Seacon Logistics and regional Rabobanks. Jan Klerken of Scelta Mushrooms is the driving force behind the chair: "Little is known about the effects of nutrition and how nutrition can contribute to the development of children. Science and education alone are not enough. What ultimately matters is that young people actually start eating healthier. This is also a responsibility for the business community. That's why we have put our shoulders under this chair together.

More research into safe and healthy food
The research site will be located at Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo. Director Saskia Goetgeluk is also pleased: "For a campus that focuses on safe and healthy food, this chair offers many starting points for companies and knowledge institutions to link up with. By collaborating with science as a company, unique knowledge is created that is of great value, both socially and economically. This chair is a magnet that will make this agrofood region even more attractive."
