At the end of 2017 Kipster opened in Venray, a new and innovative chicken farm: sustainable, animal- and environmentally friendly. Combining the latest innovations with fresh marketing is so successful that the concept will start to cross the Limburg provincial borders. Due to the high demand for the eggs, a new location with educational function is being built in the Randstad.
Kipster has an exclusive purchase from supermarket chain Lidl. Here the Limburg eggs flew out of the store so fast that they could not meet the high demand, resulting in empty shelves. "We don't want to sell no", says sustainability manager Marlijn Somhorst of Lidl. "On the contrary, we want to make it clear that sustainable products are perfectly suited to a discounter."
In response, it was decided to duplicate the concept at a location in the Randstad that has yet to be announced. Somhorst stressed that the stall will have an educational function "to show consumers where their food is produced."
International interest
Cofounder of Kipster Olivier Wegloop emphasizes that Lidl buys the Kipster eggs, but does not finance the farm. Talks are ongoing to build climate-neutral chicken houses outside the Netherlands as well. At the opening in 2017, Wegloop already expressed the ambition to "raise the keeping of chickens not only in the Netherlands, but worldwide to a more animal and environmentally friendly plan." There was already international interest at the time.
