Innovation location: Dutch Mushroom Center in Venlo

The mushroom is a healthy, sustainable, versatile and delicious delicacy, enjoyed by consumers around the world. The Netherlands leads the way when it comes to mushroom knowledge, raw materials, technology and valorization. In order to maintain and further expand this position, a Dutch Mushroom Center will be established in Venlo.

From the Dutch Mushroom Center, based at Brightlands Camus Greenport Venlo, education, research and business will work together to create a healthy future for the mushroom, with a focus on promotion, education, innovation and gastronomy.

One of the boosters is Guido Linders, BU director BVB-substrates. "Dutch Mushroom Center is the result of an ambitious collaboration in the mushroom sector. The entire chain comes together here: from cultivation and technology to processing and sales. It should become the place where knowledge in the field of mushrooms, raw materials, technology and processing can be developed, secured and shared with the rest of the world."

Stronger together

This new center is sorely needed, according to Guido, to remain visible as a sector. "The world population is growing. Food production is under pressure and the demand for healthy and sustainable food is increasing. Mushrooms fit perfectly into this world and have a lot of potential. But we are also a relatively small sector, with an aging population. Not enough new talent is entering the sector, prices are under pressure and knowledge is still not being shared. The Dutch Mushroom Center must change this. By doing this together as the entire chain, we put the sector on the map. As a collective, you achieve more than an individual entrepreneur.

Dream

The Dutch Mushroom Center will focus on research, education, business and gastronomy. Guido: "This covers everything the mushroom has to offer and together we can ensure that the demand for mushrooms increases and the sector can further strengthen and expand its position."

The physical building should be realized at the end of 2022 at Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo. Tina: "Our dream is for the Dutch Mushroom Center to become the international center in the field of knowledge and expertise through the entire mushroom chain. The place to come together to learn, develop, do business and enjoy the mushroom."
