The Venner family from Baexem has fifty dairy cows, but if it were up to son Mark, they would make room for twelve thousand trees. He is interested in planting a food forest, so the first trees went into the ground last weekend.

Harmony

Crowdfunding

The past period was mainly about finding financing for the ambitious plans. This was found by the province, which provided funding for the food forest. Other parties involved include Voedselbosbouw Nederland, Urgenda, Grandparents voor het Klimaat NL and Stichting IKL. Through crowdfunding more than 17,000 euros was already collected, a big step towards the goal of 75,000 euros.

Patience

It is a project that requires patience, Mark knows. It takes a few years before it can actually be called a forest. Yet he has faith in it, because a successful example already exists in Gelderland. Wouter van Eck started the Ketelbroek food forest in Groesbeek eleven years ago and is proof that it is possible. Van Eck helped the Venner family this weekend, when the first trees and bushes went into the ground.

As a farmer, Mark wants to work in harmony with nature. "I am concerned about the fertility of the soil, about the decline of biodiversity and degradation of the landscape. I believe in a different approach than the usual one. I can do this now because my parents and siblings support the initiative."
