Brandnettle juice as fertilizer, reeds as weed control and hemp fiber as a replacement for peat: Limburg tree growers are receiving financial support for research into innovative sustainability from the Province of Limburg. The research lines are coordinated by Cultus Agro Advies, they have a research location at Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo.

The total cost of the research into sustainable tree cultivation and new earning models is € 320,000, half of which the Province of Limburg will inject into the project. The other half will come from tree growers themselves and their partners.

Agriculture deputy Hubert Mackus is pleased with the initiative. "Tree cultivation is a strong agricultural sector in Limburg," he says. "These studies give tree growers a head start to possibly develop new earning models. This project also strengthens the unity within the sector. A plus, of course, is that most of the research takes place on the campus in Venlo."
