The control of organic farming in Europe will become stricter. From 2021, organic farmers will be inspected at least once a year. If no fraud is found, it will become biennial. The European Parliament recently agreed to this tightening of the rules.
Unauthorized residues
It is not the case that no pesticides, fertilizers or antibiotics may be used at all in organic farming. However, these should be avoided as much as possible and there are lower upper limits than in regular agriculture. If unauthorized residues are found, the source is important for the consequences. If the residues come from neighboring agriculture, then the harvest is rejected for the organic label. If it turns out to be intentional, the farm will lose its organic status.
Biological in Limburg and Europe
In Limburg the organic area concerns almost 1300 hectares, divided over 76 farms. This is 1% of the total area. In the Netherlands 2% of the total area is farmed organically and in Europe 7%.
