The Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo continues to grow. On January 22, eleven new boxes and the Nutritional Concepts Lab opened.
The Venlo campus already has ten research labs, from Brightbox, focused on daylightless multilayer cultivation, research greenhouses and experimental fields, to Brightlabs and the Healthy Eating and Food Innovation Labs at Maastricht University.
Customized fruits and vegetables
The Nutritional Concepts Lab (NCL) houses machines that process fruits and vegetables into food products that retain valuable bioactive compounds, with MiFood as the main tenant. The NCL can also be rented by others who wish to conduct research with these machines.
Theo de Kok, professor of Toxicogenomics at Maastricht University, is supervising research in the new lab. "The machines in the new lab are a perfect match for the research we will be doing: how can you use smart combinations of vegetables and fruits to develop new products that can be tailored to an individual's genetic characteristics? In addition, we can test products using other facilities on campus, such as Maastricht University's gastrointestinal simulator and Brightlabs' analysis lab. "
Also Saskia Goetgeluk, director of Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo is enthusiastic: "With this new lab, we can properly support students, researchers and companies in their search for 'tailor-made food' and the development of new healthy products."
Box in Box
Further new 'Box-in-Boxes' have been built. The Box concept responds to the demand for smaller and scalable rental spaces in an attractive knowledge network with many chance encounters. With eleven new companies and institutions, the total comes to 52.
New construction under review
In the first quarter of 2019, further new construction will take place in building Villa Flora, with 31 new boxes being developed. Some of these are already leased. Campus building Villa Flora will therefore be completely full within the foreseeable future, as will building Innovatoren. A study is currently being conducted into how a new campus building should be realized.
