Two technology companies with a passion for food, Amped and FoodInsights, are launching a project that deploys blockchain technology to set up a demand-driven and transparent (short) food chain. Blockchain technology validates relationships and activities in the chain, monitors soil and product values and facilitates communication between farmer and consumer. This project will show how agricultural products can increase in value, creating a more complete picture of the food chain. The Short Chain Taskforce approached Amped and FoodInsights for the project commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.

Use Case Utregs Supersap

The first practical step is the realization of a use case, which should lead to a Proof of Concept. A value chain will be set up with a blockchain platform, which is based on transparency and demand management. The model will be scalable and easily applicable for any short chain party that wants to work on demand management.

A product passport is also an important part of the use case. It contains all product information from soil to mouth. In time it will be possible to add values to a product, such as carbon dioxide storage on site or water collection in the soil.

In this case, we are working with Utregs Supersap from organic fruit grower William Pouw in Schalkwijk. Pouw has a lot of experience with sustainable soil management and use, energy use, residual flows, short chain and regular sales markets.

Objectives

The Blockchain technology is a powerful tool to prove where value is added in the chain. The project therefore has 3 objectives:

  1. Mapping potential value propositions in the chain with a data passport for producers. The data passport contains all information about soil properties, energy consumption, (residual) flows, product information and the farm.
  2. To completely build up the supply chain for Utregs Supersap, from soil to customer.
  3. To investigate which other demand-driven chains can be initiated.

The results of the project are also very relevant for Limburg (short chain) agrofood producers.

Amped and FoodInsights

These two technology companies have a passion for food and technology. Amped brings IT and Food together, with a focus on sustainability. FoodInsights deploys blockchain technology to create transparency throughout the supply chain.
