Province Limburg and the company Mourik have concluded a purchase agreement for the quarry on the East Flank of Brunssum. The conclusion of the purchase agreement is the first step to eventually achieve the realization of a sustainable business park at this location, together with the region.

The quarry has had an important economic function in recent years, supplying various raw materials including clay, sand, gravel, slate and quarry stone from Brunssum to industry in the region, including for construction and road building. However, the quarry has also been used for the dumping of mining stone released from Limburg construction projects.

Progressive redevelopment

Province Limburg, together with the municipality of Brunssum, the City Region of Parkstad Limburg, the municipality of Heerlen through Trilandis, and possible other partners in the region, is striving for a progressive redevelopment of the quarry site. Delegate Elianne Demollin-Schneiders:

"The Oostflank in Brunssum is one of the few sites in the region that can be used to create an appropriate impulse for the regional economic structure strengthening. With this strategic acquisition, the cooperating parties want to create opportunities in the local and regional labor market in a sustainable manner that matches the natural environment."

The business location is intended for companies that add value to the region. In the development of the business park, environmental friendliness plays a major role and the intention is to have the location make a positive contribution to the greenery in and around the area in the future.

The next step is to jointly draw up a development and cooperation strategy. Decision-making is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024. In accordance with the permit, the Mourik company will excavate clay, sand and gravel from the quarry until the end of 2026 and subsequently deliver the site, after which the actual realization of the intended redevelopment can begin.
