HC Group expands with e-fulfilment activities. Thijs Logistiek opened a completely new building. At the same time we are steadily working on sustainable and smart webshop logistics. Willem Verschuuren talks about the latest development of Living Lab Green Fulfilment: the CO2 emission meter!
The CO2 meter is a (software) tool which provides real-time insight into the CO2 emissions per package or order. Soon more about how you as an entrepreneur with a webshop can benefit from this! And about the sustainable packaging masterclass. First back to the beginning.
In 2016, Fontys started an inventory study with support from Keyport. That culminated in partnership e-fulfilment hub. In 2018 they presented a report with the first results and their vision for the future. In order to actually give substance to making e fulfillment more sustainable, in 2020 - again with support from Keyport - Living Lab Green Fulfilment started.
Living Lab Green Fulfilment
The Living Lab Green Fulfilment connects networks and organizations from across the supply chain to develop knowledge and innovations around sustainable e-fulfilment. It is an entrepreneur-driven platform that bridges the gap between government and education. Knowledge is actively shared with students to strengthen their employment prospects. Furthermore, the Living Lab is cross-sectoral and is closely connected to the high-tech, manufacturing, biobased, energy, retail and other sectors. The focus is on the entire product development process from idea to implementation.
Three innovation tracks
Concretely, Living Lab is working on three innovation paths. Each innovation pathway must contribute substantially to making the logistics chain more sustainable. The innovation tracks are:
- CO2 meter: By making the CO2 impact of shipping in a webshop per package transparent, we want to help consumers make sustainable choices in their buying process: by more often choosing a pick-up point, a different delivery time or sustainable packaging.
- Maturity model: during the set-up of the e-fulfilment process a webshop owner has to make many choices. Currently these choices are mainly made based on price and delivery speed. In the maturity model we want to provide insight into the impact of these choices on sustainability by means of life cycle analysis. This will give webshops insight into the impact of their choices on their sustainability KPIs.
- Sustainable transport: Together with B2B customers, we map the CO2 emissions of their logistics processes using the data collected by the trucks. Together we look at what actions we can take to reduce emissions and we continuously monitor the impact of these actions on CO2 emissions in order to continuously reduce emissions.

Sustainable partner: Thijs Logistiek
.In the field of sustainable transport, e-Fulfilment Hub collaborates, among others, with Thijs Logistiek. Thijs Logistiek offers finely meshed city and regional distribution within 24 hours in the Benelux. They transport packages, pallets of normal, length, outsized goods or dangerous goods within and (far) outside the region. They do this smartly and sustainably. By delivering parcels outside the region, taking as much as possible back - no empty trucks - they save at least 30%.
