The Netherlands must move away from fossil fuels by 2050. Digitalization plays a major role in our future energy system. How do we ensure that our energy system remains fair and accessible to everyone in the future? The new podcast series 'Met de Stroom mee' (Going with the flow) takes governments along in the search for the answer to this question.
Do influential technology companies soon determine our access to energy? That's one of the questions podcast creators Martine Verweij (Maatschappelijk Verantwoord Innoveren - Energy (MVI-E)) and Xander Smit (Club van Wageningen) address in the series. For this they visit places where people are generating sustainable energy. They try to exchange this energy as smart as possible, with more or less help from digital solutions. What can we learn from this?
The podcast takes governments along in this search for local solutions to generate and share energy.
Can everyone be self-sufficient?
Martine and Xander talk to a beach tent owner in Scheveningen who is virtually self-sufficient. He is now working on an energy solution for all beach tent owners. How fair is that if you don't have a beach tent? If you don't have a roof or simply don't have the money for your own panels?
How do you share an excess of energy?
Also they go to the ecological housing estate 'Earth Houses Olst'. This neighborhood is very well built in terms of energy flows. Residents therefore want to share their excess energy with neighbouring districts in a 'digitally' responsible way. Is there anything to learn from this? Even if you live in a flat?
How do vendors deal with data?
The municipality of Helmond decided to have a student build the first house of the world's smartest neighborhood. They even connected the lampposts to fiberglass there. Are you still just a citizen in Helmond? Or do you mainly provide data for smart solutions of companies?
