The Netherlands wants to grow, process and sell more home-grown plant proteins for human consumption. This is one of the goals of the new Green Deal: Protein-rich Crops. More local products will make us less dependent on imports. That is also better for the climate and the health of people and animals.
Green Deal Protein-rich-crops
On Thursday, July 14, 2022, Minister Staghouwer of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV), together with 55 other partners, signed the new Green Deal Protein-rich crops. This Green Deal contributes to the National Protein Strategy (NES). It aims to make the Netherlands more self-sufficient in new and plant proteins.
Other goals from the Green Deal Protein-rich crops are:
- To create a healthy earning model for more Dutch growers of protein crops.
- Increase sales of food products with proteins grown in the Netherlands.
- Increase the amount of plant proteins grown in the Netherlands in food products.
- Good cooperation throughout the chain. A closed cycle is the starting point here.
Chain: from breeder to retailer
It is not often that so many partners work together in a Green Deal. 56 parties from the entire chain are affiliated: from breeder and grower to processor and retailer. The full list of participating parties can be found on the Green Deal Protein-rich Crops page. Parties wishing to join the Green Deal Protein-rich Crops can contact Foodvalley NL, partner and chair of the steering group.
About the Green Deals
The Green Deals provide room for innovative initiatives from society. The aim is to accelerate the change to a sustainable economy. We support the ministries of Economic Affairs and Climate Change (EZK), Infrastructure and Water Management (IenW), and Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) in implementing Green Deals.
In December 2020, the Ministry of LNV presented the National Protein Strategy (NES). The Green Deal Protein-rich crops is part of this.
