Sustanix believes in the power of chemistry. They also believe that sustainable solutions should not come with a green premium. Because the world needs economically viable greener alternatives that can be easily adopted by the masses to have a real positive effect on the planet and human health. Microplastic is medically proven to be cancerous, create reproductive disorders, effects cardiovascular, neurological and respiratory diseases. Sustanix' mission? To replace these harmful materials like microplastics, hazardous synthetic chemicals, and PFAS with bio-based and biodegradable alternatives.

Safety first

.

Sarvesh Poddar of Sustanix: "We do apply chemistry research to develop novel materials that go into paper packaging, personal care, textiles and allied industries to replace harmful chemicals." With one very important difference, he adds, "They are cost competitive to make and deploy on a large scale, in addition to just being greener and safer for humans. When we drink cola from a can or drink water from a plastic bottle or eat pizza from that pizza box, do we even think what chemicals we are unknowingly putting in the body?"

Truly circular

Sustanix is a Dutch deep tech chemistry startup developing novel materials that are truly circular. Think about food packaging. Many paper-based packages are coated with synthetic chemicals to make them grease- or water-resistant. Unfortunately, these coatings often contain PFAS and microplastics, which harm the environment and can even be risky for human health. Sarvesh : "We created 100% plant-based coatings and additives with excellent hydrophobic and oleophobic properties, proven industrially recyclable. Unlike modifying existing biopolymers, we developed a proprietary biopolymer and formulation."

"Prioritizing sustainability is not only good for the planet but, even more importantly, for human health."

Making real changes

Sarvesh: "Our coatings offer the same performance without the harmful ingredients. They help companies switch to more sustainable materials without changing their production processes." Sustanix's technology works with existing industrial equipment, making the transition smooth and scalable. "Right now, we are transitioning from a 5-litre scale to 100-litre scale with our trial partners, helping businesses make real, impactful changes."

Scaling up ...

Innovation doesn't happen overnight. That's something these ambitious entrepreneurs do realize. "To bring our bio-based coatings from the lab to real-world applications, we needed - and still need - to scale up production.

Testing in real-world conditions

Sustanix is currently working with 18 companies across Europe and the U.S. Sarvesh: "These businesses are testing our coatings in real-world conditions, This helps us refine and improve our technology, tailored to specific industry needs." The entrepreneurs made big strides since starting this journey. "Our coatings now show strong performances in packaging applications. But we're not stopping there. We're now looking toward full commercial production, bringing our sustainable coatings to market on a large scale."
