Entrepreneurs have until June 11 at the latest to apply for the new 'Sprintsubsidie MKB' from the Province of Limburg. With this scheme, 3 million euros are available for digitalisation and sustainability. Those who want a chance to win up to 24,500 euros have to be quick, although the dreaded paperwork is not so bad. A look at the opportunities and the critical lower limit in the region.
No thick advisory reports, but immediate money for concrete action. That is the promise of the Sprints grant, now open for its first round. Deputy Stephan Satijn (Economy) calls SMEs "the engine of our economy" and sees the grant as concrete support. The focus is on applying existing, proven technologies. Just work smarter and reduce costs, in other words.
100% chance of success
Enterprise circles are responding enthusiastically. Because the budget is distributed on the basis of entry, consultants talk about a hard race against the clock. In other words: first come first served. Still, there is plenty of budget available now. Those who meet the conditions have a 100 per cent chance of getting the grant as long as there is space. The possibilities are broad. Anything that makes the company more innovative is allowed on the budget. Think artificial intelligence (AI), digitisation or sustainable investments. For entrepreneurs who join forces in a partnership, the amount rises to a maximum of a tonne.
No administrative hassle
Where beforehand there were fears of an administrative hurdle, Martijn van Helvert, chairman of MKB-Limburg, reassures. "We were able to take the wishes of entrepreneurs on board thanks to the prior SME test," Van Helvert explains. "A practical registration was one of those wishes. However, there are a number of thresholds to counter possible abuse." Those who still cannot figure it out can email voorzitter@mkblimburg.nl.
The maximum amount of 24,500 euros is also a deliberate choice to ease the burden on SMEs. Van Helvert: "If you do higher amounts, that again gives entrepreneurs a lot of hurdles such as registration requirements and administrative issues."
The critical lower limit
The real threshold is at the lower end of the market. The province applies a minimum project size of 10,000 euros. Since the grant reimburses half, an entrepreneur must always bring or partly finance at least EUR 5,000 from his own pocket. For larger SMEs, this is perfectly manageable. For many self-employed people, however, such an investment is a considerable threshold. Although they are legally allowed to participate, this financial minimum ensures that, in practice, the budget mainly goes to larger SMEs. Those who still want to participate should hurry, because the clock is ticking until 11 June.
