Learning is not only done in a classroom, but also in practice. That is the idea behind the JobXperience days, an initiative in which companies open their doors to secondary school students and teachers. In February and March, 86 students from six different schools in the Keyport region had the opportunity to take a look into the world of engineering, logistics, metalworking, sustainability and even municipal administration. A total of 12 companies and organizations participated. Participating students as well as companies are very enthusiastic about this initiative.

JobXperience

Learning outside of school

.

The JobXperience days, organized in cooperation with Keyport, Beleef je Loopbaan, Sterk Techniek Onderwijs Midden-Limburg, LVO, SOML and Yuverta, offer students the opportunity to learn about various professions. Whether it was welding at Clement Group, a tour at WBM, taking color and light measurements at Admesy, or debating in the council chamber of the Municipality of Roermond - practical experience was the focus everywhere. By actively participating themselves, young people learn much more than from a book: they experience what a profession really means and discover which fields of work appeal to them.

From old paper to innovative technology

.

One of the most impressive company visits took place at Smurfit Westrock Roermond Papier. Here the students saw how old paper is recycled into corrugated packaging - a practical example of circular enterprise. At Re-Color Weert, students were allowed to independently repair a scratch and mix and spray a color, while at Laurentius Hospital Roermond they got a look behind the scenes of the technical department. From the tube station to the boiler room, technology plays a crucial role in a hospital.

Hands-on experience at leading companies

In addition to observing work processes, students got the chance to work on their own at many companies. At Clement Group they learned welding and laser cutting, at Van Tilburg Bastianen Truck & Trailerservice they tested batteries and refilled fluids, and at DSV Sevenum they gained insight into the complex world of logistics. The practical assignments made the JobXperience days not only instructive, but also fun. One student aptly put it, "Great this! More fun than school! When will there be another JobXperience?"

A unique day at the municipality

.

The Municipality of Roermond also offered a special experience. Five students from ROER College Schöndeln walked along for a day and talked with aldermen about municipal challenges. They debated in the council chamber about a fireworks ban and were given an exclusive tour, including a visit to the old prison and the carillon. The response was enthusiastic: "A very interesting day in which you learn more than on an average school day."

Repeatable

.

With company visits still planned to Vekoma Rides in Vlodrop, Doon in Herten and Maasgouw Maritiem, among others, JobXperience is increasingly taking shape as a regular part of career orientation. By letting students discover where their interests lie outside the school walls, the connection between education and the job market is strengthened. A conscious choice is made to work with small groups of students with customized programs. Both students and companies are enthusiastic: a win-win situation that calls for a sequel!
