The importance of Limburg's inland ports is growing
October 6, a congress on inland ports was held in Venray. There are 14 inland ports on the Maas in Limburg. Without transport via the Meuse, the number of trucks's on our main highways would double. Thanks to the Meuse, we can easily and sustainably transport a lot of bulk. Very important for the regional economy. Because the Meuse flows across borders, people in Limburg also look across the border for partners to cooperate with. This is how the title 'Borderless' came about.
Local Economy
Without transport via the Meuse, the number of trucks'on our main highways would double. Transport by water saves a lot of CO2 emissions and becomes even more sustainable thanks to investments. From the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, containers find their way from the sea towards their destination. Of every five containers leaving Rotterdam, one arrives at an inland port in Limburg. Some 5,000 people work at the Blueports' wharves. The transport of bulk materials and goods is the starting point for economic activities that all in all generate one billion euros in added value.
Boundless
The ambition to become more sustainable is great. This was already evident when the European Union (EU) provided another million subsidy for the further development of the inland ports in Venlo, Roermond, Leudal (Zevenellen), Stein (Chemelot Haven), Maastricht and Tilburg (node partner on the freight corridor). They can count on €7 million from Europe over the next three years for research and up to €120 million in subsidies for expansion. The EU subsidies support the business community that, with investments in the inland ports, is working on the circular economy and the switch from transport by road to transport by water.
