On Wednesday, May 11, Velocity was launched with a festive opening; a new sharing system with electric bikes. The first cyclists received a voucher to try out the e-bike. Richard de Boer, mayor of Landgraaf and vice-chairman of the Parkstad City Region, joined the first enthusiasts for the official launch by getting on their bikes at the e-bike sharing station on Akerstraat in Heerlen. The twenty new stations in Parkstad will link up with the hundred stations already existing in the Aachen region.
Velocity is partly funded by the investment program Regio Deal Parkstad Limburg. In order to introduce the e-bike sharing system to a wide audience, there is also cooperation with Visit Zuid Limburg and Zuid Limburg Bereikbaar, program bureau for accessibility and sustainable mobility. Operation of the new e-bike sharing system is in the hands of Velocity Limburg. The parent company Velocity Aachen already operates an e-bike sharing system with about a hundred charging stations in Aachen and surrounding areas and a single charging station in Kerkrade and Vaals.
Through the Regio Deal, the State, the Province of Limburg and Stadsregio Parkstad Limburg are jointly investing in the region to improve broad prosperity. Part of this is the better matching of supply and demand within the Euroregional labour market. Offering attractive, affordable and sustainable transport for commuting, among other things, contributes to this.
