The University of Leiden is introducing the first medical program in the Netherlands with AI as a core subject. From their first year, students will learn to use AI and medical technology effectively and evaluate it critically. This will prepare them for the future of healthcare. Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and Leiden University have teamed up to introduce this groundbreaking program.
The program
.The program begins with a theme week in which students are introduced to various forms of AI, including predictive models, image recognition and language models. Students will also learn about longstanding medical technologies such as blood pressure monitors, MRI scanners and surgical robots. A crucial part of the AI curriculum is an emphasis on ethical considerations.
AI studies popular
The Leiden University initiative serves as an example for other medical schools in the Netherlands and abroad. AI studying in general is also becoming increasingly popular. The FD reported earlier that there is more interest in courses such as Applied Data Science and AI and Artificial Intelligence. In mid-January, many more students applied for such studies than in previous years.
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) saw an increase in applications for both the AI bachelor's and master's degrees. For the bachelor there were 88 in 2019 and now there are 131. The master's went from 96 to 179 enrollments.
