The world of SMEs is constantly changing. Transitions such as digitalization, sustainability and personnel issues require flexibility, vision and, above all, cooperation. In the middle of this dynamic playing field stands Ambitieus MKB046, an initiative that supports entrepreneurs in Sittard-Geleen, Beek and Stein with the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Entrepreneurs central to national pilot
In July, the Ministry of Economic Affairs introduced a new SME Action Plan, in which Sittard-Geleen is one of six regions in the Netherlands participating in the pilot. Leon, entrepreneur and initiator of Stadslabs, explains: "The experiences we gain here serve as an example for other regions. We are continuously learning and researching what works, so we can help other regions improve their own SME support."
The pilot focuses on customization for entrepreneurs: what do they need, how can their growth be stimulated and in what way can support be optimized? "We really work bottom-up," adds Leon. "We are close to the entrepreneurs and respond directly to their questions and needs."
"Every day we hear the stories of entrepreneurs struggling with change. By listening carefully and really understanding what's going on, we can provide solutions that not only work here, but can also inspire other regions."
Connecting companies and sharing knowledge
Ambitious MKB046 supports SMEs in their transitions, focusing on five themes: sustainability, digitalization, circularity, business models and human resources. Leon outlines the bigger picture: "Our strength lies in collaboration. The program is an initiative of three municipalities (Beek, Sittard-Geleen and Stein), Rabobank, BSG, LIOF and Stadslabs Sittard-Geleen. Stadslabs coordinates the program on behalf of all initiators. In addition, we are working closely with partners such as Brightlands and local business associations."
This joint effort ensures that entrepreneurs have access to the right knowledge and tools. "We are not creating completely new solutions, but ensuring that existing resources are better utilized and available."
The practice: what do entrepreneurs think?
Dyantha, account manager and the face for entrepreneurs in Beek and Sittard-Geleen, among others, emphasizes the personal approach: "We are in daily contact with entrepreneurs. Our role is to pick up their questions and needs and support them effectively. Sometimes this is very practical: someone has a question about digitalization or sustainability. We make sure he or she gets to the right program or partner."
Yvonne, responsible for entrepreneurs in the Stein region, adds: "Entrepreneurs appreciate our accessible approach. They notice that we really listen and like the fact that they can come to us with all their questions. Many entrepreneurs are uncertain about transitions such as digitization or the energy transition and often do not dare to ask for help. We help them overcome that barrier."
A look to the future
The team at Ambitious MKB046 has ambitious plans for the future. Leon explains, "We want to help as many entrepreneurs as possible to future-proof their businesses. There are still many companies that are barely digitized, and there are huge opportunities there. We are working hard to scale up our program, both within the Western Mining Region and beyond. We hope our experiences here can be an inspiration to other regions."
Ambitious MKB046 entrepreneur day
On Friday, Oct. 4, the Ambitious MKB046 Entrepreneurs Day will take place. This day offers businesses from the region the opportunity to connect, share knowledge and be inspired by new ideas and collaborations. Yvonne: "We want to encourage as many entrepreneurs as possible to come. It's a great opportunity to learn from each other and together accelerate the transition to a future-proof business."
The cooperation between the many partners and the focus on innovation and entrepreneurship make Ambitieus MKB046 a powerful engine for regional growth. With Leon, Dyantha and Yvonne at the helm, the future of SMEs in the Western Mining Region is in good hands.
