Richard Kok is owner of consulting and projects agency "In the meantime. In his daily work he develops policies for organizations, for example on dealing with energy poverty. In addition, as a water coach, Richard gives advice on disconnecting rainwater. Mainly regional in Limburg, but towards the future also nationwide.
Why are you doing sustainable business?
From my environmental background and ongoing interest in sustainability, I feel an intrinsic motivation to contribute. I see the need to shift to a more sustainable society and no longer believe in unbridled economic growth. This work is a practical calling to contribute to change. I like to use my knowledge and experience for a better future.
What, in your opinion, is needed to accelerate the path to a sustainable society?
I am convinced that we need to strengthen the social and ecological fabric (again). This means looking for alternative solutions within our current economic system. By slowing down for a moment, we can see the bigger picture. Instead of thinking in efficiency, be effective. This requires a change in thinking and action at all levels of society. And this will not happen overnight.
"It is important to understand the context."
We are now in a time of acceleration and big capital. Everything has to pay off economically. But we see that this leads to worrisome situations. And the market doesn't always have all the solutions. It is important to understand the context. I don't work with one tool, but with a whole box full of different models, practical experience, articles, books, movies and philosophies. I take out what is needed at that moment.
What do you contribute to a smarter, more sustainable and healthier Limburg?
From my expertise, I help organizations with sustainability. By providing new ways of thinking and acting. At the policy level and very practical in implementation. I think that the quality of surface water, purification of water and the availability of clean (drinking) water is going to be the next big headache in the Netherlands.
With my expertise I help organizations with sustainability.
By promoting soil infiltration of rainwater and in the near future greening of business parks, I contribute to a healthier living environment and resilient society.
What can you advise other entrepreneurs?
Take advantage of the schemes available, such as those from Water Ready. These allow you to put rainwater from your roof or property into the ground. It is well worth investigating whether there are subsidies in your municipality for such initiatives.
Another interesting scheme is the MIA and Vamil for greening business parks. Think about reducing heat stress and energy consumption. Beneficial for the environment, but also important for the health of employees. In addition, there are various options available to bring rainwater safely into the ground.
The awareness around these issues is not yet as high as it should be. There is still much to be gained. Every year, almost 900 liters of water per square meter come down in the Netherlands. Now much rainwater is drained from an area through the sewer system. This can often better end up locally in the soil or surface water.
Any tips?
Think about it, delve into the topic and get good advice. Ultimately, we all have to do something with it. And we really need to pick up the pace. If you look closely at all the developments, things are starting to get dire and we will have to move faster in the right direction. An integrated approach works best then.
