Doorspace: A Hub for Creativity and Circular Innovation in Maastricht
4 June | Healthy, Duurzaam | ShiftLimburg
Located in the bustling heart of Maastricht, Doorspace is the city’s newest makerspace, brimming with creativity, innovation, and a forward-thinking approach to circularity. Led by the artistic visionaries Toine Meisters and Sebastian Costa, Doorspace not only offers access to state-of-the-art machinery but also provides a place for collaborative learning, knowledge sharing, and high-quality innovation.
From Vision to Reality
Doorspace’s origins are deeply rooted in the diverse backgrounds of its founders, and the story begins at Qeske Maastricht, a vibrant hub for startups and innovation. It was here that the concept of Doorspace was born and given the space to grow.
Toine, who has a background in furniture and interior design, teamed up with Sebastian, an Italian architect and artistic assistant. Together, they transformed the original idea of a simple workshop into a large-scale vision: a makerspace where accessibility, collaboration, and sustainability come together seamlessly.
Sebastian explains: “When I came to Maastricht, I brought my experience in architecture and prototyping with me. Together with Mark Hagen, we founded a CNC manufacturing company and gradually expanded the concept of a makerspace with the support of municipal grants. Our mission is to make high-quality machines accessible to everyone—whether you’re a hobbyist, a small business owner, or an innovator looking to make an impact.”
What makes Doorspace unique?
Doorspace is built on three pillars: access to machines, learning and skill development, and collaborative innovation. It’s a place where you can bring your ideas to life, whether that means experimenting with woodworking, mastering CNC techniques, or learning how to upcycle plastic waste.
“Accessibility is essential,” says Toine. “We want everyone to feel welcome here and have the opportunity to discover new techniques without any barriers. At the same time, we strive for high-quality innovation to keep pace with industry standards. We work together with municipalities and other partners to improve what we offer.”
Circularity as a Core Principle
At Doorspace, circularity isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a guiding principle. Through workshops and collaborations with companies such as Precious Plastic and Arapaha, the makerspace focuses on sustainable design methods and the reuse of materials. Sebastian explains: “We’ll be offering workshops on recycling and upcycling materials, such as sorting and processing plastic into new forms using our heat press. It’s all about practical knowledge that empowers people to make environmentally conscious choices.”
There are also plans to integrate bio-based materials into product lines and to set up collaborative projects that demonstrate sustainable production methods. The approach is both direct—by teaching and demonstrating circular practices—and indirect—by providing people with the tools to make more sustainable choices in their designs.
Collaboration and Ambition
Doorspace collaborates with organizations such as Textile Innovation Maastricht (TIM) and regional entities to become a pillar of innovation in Limburg. But its ambition extends even further. Toine and Sebastian dream of an ecosystem in which creators and innovators work side by side, supported by an outdoor space featuring containers that serve as design studios and business incubators.
“Looking to the future, I see Doorspace as a place where the impossible seems possible; a place without limits, where creativity and high-quality innovation come together,” says Toine. “I want this to be a makerspace where solutions are always found, where people come to be inspired and to inspire others.”
Sebastian adds: “I envision a community of designers and entrepreneurs who use our machines and collaborate in a constantly evolving environment. The goal is to create a village of ideas, where everything comes together—from marketing to production—to bring concepts to life.”
Advice for Fellow Entrepreneurs
For those tackling the challenges of sustainability and innovation, Toine and Sebastian offer this advice: “Don’t let yourself be limited by boundaries or the fear of failure. Sometimes ideas develop into unexpected but brilliant solutions,” says Toine. Sebastian emphasizes: “If you believe in something, don’t let skeptics discourage you. The process of trial and error makes you better. Every failure is a step closer to success.”
Looking Ahead
With a dynamic environment and ambitious goals, Doorspace is poised to redefine what a makerspace is in the region. This is not just about using machines, but about creating a movement where ideas flourish, sustainability is a top priority, and collaboration leads to groundbreaking innovation. As Doorspace prepares to officially open its doors, the excitement is palpable.
